CITY of DUNCAN

A
t the heart of the Cowichan lies the City of Duncan. Duncan is the service centre for the Cowichan region and its population of over 77,000 people. Here you will find all the modern stores and amenities, and in the picturesque downtown core a number of heritage buildings, including the City Hall clock tower and the original train station that impart the history and an old fashioned charm to the downtown experience.

Over the past few years Downtown Duncan has gained the reputation as the Boutique Capital of Vancouver Island, and for good reason. With over one hundred independently owned retail stores within a few blocks walking distance, Downtown Duncan offers great shopping for all ages, from fine clothing to rare books, galleries, unique toys and giftware, and a chance to pamper yourself at a day spa or salon.

Duncan also offers a great selection of cafes and restaurants providing a variety of cuisines. Many of the restaurants showcase the local produce and local wines. Every Saturday you will find a bustling farmer’s market in the Duncan Town Square, offering a wide selection of fresh produce in season, crafts, specialty foods and cheeses, and local entertainment. This is one of the largest farmer’s markets on Vancouver Island, and proudly represents the strong agricultural roots of the region.

A vibrant arts community and rich cultural heritage is reflected throughout Duncan. Over 80 hand-carved totems are featured in the Duncan Totem Tour, each a pictorial record of the Cowichan people’s legends, myths, and family ancestry. You can wind your way through the heart of Downtown Duncan on a self guided tour or enjoy the complimentary guided tours, which start at the train station, and which take place from May through until September.

Special Attractions include a visit to the Quw’utsun Cultural and Conference Centre, the BC Forest Discovery Centre and the free tours of the Freshwater EcoCentre.
