Located just north of Chemainus, in the rural community of Saltair, Ma Maison Cafe is a lovely spot to pop in with a friend for a coffee and a snack, or a delicious lunch with a refreshing glass of local wine, beer or cider.
Chef Lauren Cartmel, who was raised on Vancouver Island, honed her skills in Vancouver, London and Los Angeles in top restaurants and under the influence of industry leading chefs. These days she’s turning her considerable skills to this popular culinary venture, and by all accounts visitors and locals alike couldn’t be happier.
Ma Maison is located in the old Saltair CP railway station, which has been converted into a charming, bright and immaculate dining space, and is turning out rave-worthy meals and treats. To enter the ground-level coffee shop/restaurant, there is a threshold with a “lip of significance”, but my compact scooter handled it with ease. Once inside, there is plenty of space to manoeuvre comfortably with tables and chairs, which can be easily moved to accommodate mobility devices.
The restroom is large and accessible. Order at the counter, and servers will bring your snack or meal. Staff are pleasant and willing to assist if needed.
Be advised that this roadside venue on 10445 Chemainus Road can be easy to miss as you buzz along merrily, so keep your eyes peeled. There is parking in front of the train station, which is paved and level. Parking in front is limited, and is labelled for motorcycles though it seems to be used by all, so you may have to park on the side of Willshire Road immediately north of the restaurant.
