Important Traffic Advisory: Herd Road Bridge Rehabilitation Project (May 2025 – Fall 2025)

Please be prepared for some significant changes to access businesses along Herd Rd in the North Cowichan area! Starting May 20, 2025, and continuing into the Fall of 2025, the Herd Road Bridge at Richards Creek will undergo essential rehabilitation work.

What You Need to Know: Herd Road Closure and Access

Location: Herd Road Bridge at Richards Creek
Timeframe: May 20, 2025, to Fall of 2025
Hours of Work: 7:00 AM – 5:00 PM (subject to weather and field conditions)

To facilitate this vital work, Herd Road will be closed to through-traffic between Bell McKinnon Road and Lakes Road.

Here’s a breakdown of access and recommended routes:

Local Traffic Only:

  • Herd Road between the Trans-Canada Highway and Bell McKinnon Road will be accessible to local traffic only.
  • Within the main closed section of Herd Road (between Bell McKinnon and Lakes Road), access will be limited to local residents, emergency vehicles, school buses, and transit.
  • Local traffic will be able to access the closed section of Herd Road via Norcross and Mays Roads.
  • Kensington Road will be accessible directly via Lakes Road and will be open to Herd Road for local traffic only.

Detour & Alternative Routes:

  • For Maple Bay traffic: Please use Maple Bay Road or Herd Road to Lakes Road/Beverly Street.
  • For Crofton traffic: Consider using Osborne Bay Road/Lakes Road/Beverly Street or Crofton Road/Chemainus Road/Mt Sicker Road.
  • IMPORTANT: Please DO NOT use Mount Sicker Road as a detour route.

Accessing Businesses:

  • Pacific Northwest Raptors (1877 Herd Road): Accessible via Crofton and Osborne Bay Road (south-bound) or via Beverly Street and Lakes Road (north-bound).
  • Alderlea Vineyards (1751 Stamps Road): Accessible via Crofton and Osborne Bay Road (south-bound) or via Beverly Street and Lakes Road (north-bound).
  • Emandare Vineyard (6798 Norcross Road): Accessible via south Norcross Road.
  • Farm gate sales along local roads: Accessible via designated local traffic or detour routes.
  • Maple Bay businesses: Accessible via Crofton and Osborne Bay Road (south-bound) or via Trunk Road and Maple Bay Road (north-bound).

Appropriate signage and traffic control persons will be in place as required to guide you.
