Discover Cowichan from the sky with Helijet

One Day Trip

Helijet offers trips between downtown Vancouver and downtown Victoria as well as downtown Vancouver to downtown Nanaimo. Whatever route you choose, you’ll get a bird’s eye view of some spectacular coastal scenery!

  1. Travel to the Island – Helijet offers a breathtaking, short trip from the mainland to Vancouver Island. Daily round trips are offered from Vancouver Harbour or YVR Airport to Victoria Harbour or Nanaimo Harbour. You’ll experience incredible aerial views of the Southern Gulf Islands and experience world-class service along the way.

  2. Head to Cowichan – Once you arrive in either Nanaimo or Victoria Harbour, you have two options for your short trip to Cowichan.
Leaving from Nanaimo Harbour – Rent a car from Budget Car Rental down the street from the Harbour for your scenic one hour drive to Cowichan.

Stop in scenic Ladysmith for a stroll along the waterfront to explore the famous Ladysmith Waterfront Gallery where you’ll find an incredible collection of visual art displays featuring local artists. Be sure to stroll the iconic First Avenue to peruse the shops and craft goods. Stopping for lunch? Wild Poppy Bistro or Ma Maison offer fresh, local fare in an intimate setting.

Leaving from Victoria Harbour – rent a car from Budget Car Rental down the street from the Harbour for your scenic drive to Cowichan.

You’re just 45 minutes from Cowichan and your drive includes the historic Malahat, named one of Canada’s most scenic drives. We recommend taking your time with this one as there are some breathtaking lookout spots along the way like the Malahat Summit, which offers views of the Gulf Islands and Saanich Inlet across to the Saanich Peninsula. Be sure to stop off at Villa Eyrie Resort’s Alpina Restaurant for a world class meal and a world class view.

  3. Stay in an Orchard – Cowichan offers many unique accommodations from farm B&Bs to guest houses on vineyards. Check out the Yurts at Merridale Cidery and Distillery for a unique ā€œglampingā€ experience overlooking the working orchard.

  4. Hike Mt. Tzouhalem – No trip to Cowichan would be complete without checking out some of the amazing hiking trails available! For the more adventurous hiker, check out Mt. Tzouhalem near Duncan, at the northern side of Cowichan. This trail is loved for its unique shape of sheer cliffs and the gorgeous views of the valley below. Be sure to check out the Chase Woods Nature Conservancy and visit the iconic white cross at the top.
*Note – this trail is quite dense so be sure to plan your route ahead of time.

  5. Dinner in the vineyard – Right down the street from Merridale Cidery and Distillery, you’ll find Unsworth Vineyards and Restaurant. A local favourite for their upscale dining overlooking the beautiful vineyard. Choose from their locally-sourced menu and pair your meal with an award-winning wine.

  6. When you’re ready to head home – relaxed from your stay, of course – be sure to book your return trip with Helijet and check out their tour and charter flights for many amazing destinations around Vancouver Island.
